Making a Domestic Money Transfer

Before making a payment, be sure to have the following at hand:

Your HSBC account number
Receiver’s full name
Receiver’s banking information: IBAN, bank name, and purpose of payment

In case of any missing details in the transfer, we may attempt to contact you within two working days. Otherwise, transfers would be subject to cancellation.

Making an International Money Transfer

Before making a payment, be sure to have the following at hand:

Your HSBC account number
Receiver’s full name
Receiver’s banking information: International Bank Account Number (IBAN) or account number, the bank or the intermediary bank SORT/SWIFT/BIC code, and the purpose of payment

Payments will be routed overseas using this information. Incorrect or invalid information may lead to the payment being delayed or rejected by the overseas bank. In such cases, because of charges and differences in exchange rates, you may not receive the full amount back.

Some countries or regions may request additional information.

A small number of currencies can only be traded on-shore due to local regulatory restrictions, and although these currencies will still be available for you to transfer in, there may be a short delay in processing these transactions.

1. What is IBAN? How does it help?

IBAN is the internationally accepted ISO (International Standards Organization) numbering system to identify Bank accounts. The IBAN provides a unique account number for each customer account, which allows sending and receiving Banks to validate the accuracy of the beneficiary IBAN.

IBAN has been introduced to standardize the identification of bank accounts. It is essential to understand the following points regarding IBAN:The IBAN is not a new account number
Existing account numbers will not be replaced
Additional characters will appear in front of existing bank account numbers
The original bank account number, plus the additional characters, will be known as the IBAN

Implementing the IBAN system will help improve the quality of information exchanged between banks, either within in Qatar or internationally. Its reliability and accuracy will help to reduce errors and delays in transaction processing.

2. Is IBAN being implemented by all banks in Qatar ?

As directed by the QCB, with effect from 31st December 2013, the IBAN shall be used by Banks and their customers for Electronic Payments. This includes:

Domestic Electronic Payments to and from customer accounts with banks in Qatar;
Cross-border outgoing Electronic Payments from customer accounts with Banks in Qatar to customer accounts of banks/financial institutions in "Countries that have adopted IBAN" where the use of IBAN is mandatory;
Cross-border incoming Electronic Payments to customer accounts with Banks in Qatar from Banks outside of Qatar.

3. Where do I get my IBAN for my HSBC accounts?

You may generate the IBAN for your HSBC Qatar account number through the IBAN Generator tool on our website (www.hsbc.com.qa). Please remember that the IBAN would be different for each of your accounts (should you have more than 1 account).

4. Can you help me obtain the IBAN for my account number with another Bank?

HSBC Bank Middle East Limited - Qatar, is unable to provide IBAN for accounts held with another bank and advises you to approach the respective bank for assistance.

5. What happens if I don't quote the IBAN of the beneficiary while sending an electronic transfer?

With effect from 31st December 2013, electronic funds transfer requests sent to banks within Qatar should carry the IBAN, failing which all such payment instructions may be rejected / delayed, and may be subject to additional charges.

6. What happens if the IBAN is not quoted when receiving electronic payments?

With effect from 31st December 2013, electronic funds transfer instructions received from banks within and outside Qatar should carry the IBAN, failing which all such payment instructions may be rejected / delayed, and may be subject to additional charges.

7. Do my domestic/overseas remitters need to quote my IBAN?

Yes, you should request your customers to make payments to your account using the IBAN account number. If you issue invoices, you should quote the IBAN on the invoices too.

8. Do we need to quote IBAN for inter-account transfers (payments within HSBC)?

No. Where both the debit and credit accounts are with HSBC Qatar, you can continue to provide the standard HSBC bank account number.

9. Currently, I use Internet Banking; do I need to state the IBAN of the beneficiary when sending an electronic payment to another bank in Qatar?

Yes, please ensure that you provide the valid IBAN of the beneficiary at the time of initiating the payment instruction to ensure that your beneficiary gets the credit on time.

10. I have standing instructions loaded with HSBC for periodic payments to another bank in Qatar; do I need to give revised instructions with IBAN?

Yes, if you currently have standing instructions set-up to another bank in Qatar, you must advise HSBC of the IBAN by submitting an amendment request using Standing Instruction Form. You may find a copy of the form on the internet or pick up the form from the nearest HSBC branch. We advise you to do this well in advance, to ensure our systems are updated in time to avoid payment delays or rejections.

11. What if I give a transfer instruction over the counter at a branch, do I still need to provide the IBAN of the beneficiary?

Yes, please ensure that you provide the IBAN to avoid delays in processing the payments.

12. I receive monthly payments into my account from my creditors/employers; what instructions do I need to give them?

Please provide your IBAN to your creditors/employer, to ensure timely receipt of funds into your account.

13. Is there any service charge if we fail to provide IBAN at the time of making payment requests? Will there be any charge should the remitter fail to incorporate my IBAN at the time of making payments?

For the time being, there will not be any additional charges, other than normal transaction processing fee. Should this change, HSBC Bank Middle East Limited - Qatar will communicate the tariff changes to you.

14. I want to send funds to a beneficiary outside of Qatar. However, the beneficiary is not aware of his/her IBAN. What should I do?

If you are sending funds to a country or region where IBAN has not been implemented, then you are not required to quote the beneficiary’s IBAN. However, if the country/region has implemented IBAN, your beneficiary should be able to obtain his/her IBAN from their bank.

HSBC Bank Middle East Limited (the Bank) is required to act in accordance with the laws and regulations operating in various countries and regions around the world relating to international sanctions. Under these sanctions requirements, the Bank is prohibited from engaging in certain transactions. The Bank will only process transactions that are in compliance with applicable sanctions.
